The hickam difference. We can make it better, together

In Memoriam: Ray Romero

On April 28, 2024, Hickam Federal Credit Union Board of Director Emeritus Ray Romero passed away at the age of 90. Ray served on the Board in many capacities, including as Board Chair from 1997 through 2017. Ray retired from the Board in 2021 after serving for 38 years.

During Ray's tenure, Hickam FCU expanded its field of membership from employees working on Hickam Air Force Base to a community-chartered credit union that now serves the entire island of Oahu. Under his leadership, the credit union grew to seven conveniently located branches and assets increased from $30 million to over $600 million. Ray's dedication, vision, and guidance helped Hickam FCU grow to become one of the leading credit unions in Hawaii. Ray served the credit union selflessly and passionately, and we thank him for his time and commitment. He will be greatly missed.

Making the Community Better, Together

Educating Teens on Personal Finance

Mahalo to the Hickam Teen Center for inviting us to give their students a lesson on personal finance. We're glad we could provide these teens with essential insights into the financial milestones they're beginning to contemplate (like buying their first car) in a fun and interactive way. If your organization is looking for fun, informative lessons on personal finance for all ages, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We'd love to help.

Volunteer Income Tax Preparation

2024 marks the 17th year Hickam FCU staff assisted and prepared tax returns as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free income tax preparation services to low-income individuals, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly. From February through April, Hickam FCU was able to assist with processing 75 tax returns, resulting in $85,559 in federal refunds and $33,875 in state refunds.

Keiki & Kupuna ID

Our Hickam FCU staff and family volunteers returned to the community to provide our Keiki & Kupuna ID service at the Emergency Preparedness Fair recently held at Windward Mall. Thirteen staff and family volunteers helped with intake, capturing photos and fingerprints, and producing the ID cards. We created 78 Keiki IDs and 4 Kupuna IDs for our community.

While Keiki and Kupuna IDs cannot be used in any official capacity, they are a crucial resource in emergencies. The IDs can help families locate or identify missing children and elders. The individual's information, photo, and fingerprints are displayed on the card.

Beware of Spoofed Phone Calls and Text Messages

If you receive a suspicious phone call or text message that appears to be from a Hickam Federal Credit Union requesting you to validate your personal information, do not respond. As a reminder, Hickam FCU will not contact you asking for your personal or financial information. We will never ask you to provide your account numbers, debit or credit card numbers, or online banking or mobile banking login information. Don't hesitate to contact us at 808.423.1391 if you receive suspicious phone calls or text messages.
